Arboretum Events

 

As I may have mentioned to you earlier, we are celebrating the Arboretum's 50th Birthday this year! Festivities will begin this April and go through March 2008 with some sort of culminating event. Additionally, the University of Alabama Arboretum will present four faculty members from the Department of Biological Sciences, speaking to the public on topics of general interest. Here's what we have scheduled now:

 

 

Current Events

"" What: 50th Anniversary Gala - Art and Accolades
When: Thursday, April 3, 2008 / 6:00PM - 8:00PM
Where: President's Mansion, University of Alabama Campus
Additional information:Concluding the 2007 – 2008 50th anniversary year of activities, the Arboretum’s gala event, “Art and Accolades,” will take place on April 3, 2008. The celebration will be located at the President’s Mansion on The University of Alabama campus from 6 – 8 p.m. Tickets are $40/individual and $75/couple and are available by calling the Arboretum.

A portion of “Art and Accolades” will be dedicated to recognizing and honoring the past directors of the UA Arboretum: Gibbes Patton, Joab Thomas, Roger Sayers, and Fred Gabrielson. The gala will also feature a live auction of pass-a-long art. Art donations have been received by Nall and many other local artists and photographers.

We have a variety of volunteer opportunities to help with preparation for the sale, as well as the sale itself.

What: Pruning Workshop With Larry Quick
When: Saturday, January 26, 2008 / 2:00 PM
Where: University of Alabama Arboretum
Additional information: Guest pruner Larry Quick, Executive Director of Aldridge Botanical Gardens in Hoover, will give a pruning workshop at the Univeristy of Alabama's Arboretum. Larry spent 18 years as County Extension Agent with the Alabama Cooperative Extension system, and has four years as Program Coordinator for the Landscape Technology Program at Jefferson State Community College. As Executive Director of Aldridge Botanical gardens, Larry is responsible for overall management, development, and implementation of the Master Plan.

What: Annual St. Valentine's Day Dinner / Dance
When: Thursday, February 14, 2008 / 6:30 PM - 9:00PM
Where: Smith Hall / Natural History Museum, University of Alabama campus (click here for a map)
Additional information: Join us for our Annual St. Valentine's Day Dinner co-sponsored by the Alabama Museum of Natural History. Appetizers will be served at 6:30 PM, followed by dancing to big band/swing music performed by the George Winter Band at 7:15. Black tie dress is optional, and tickets are $75.00. What: Informal Talks: Dr. Martha Powell & Dr. Stephen Secor

Where: Tuscaloosa Public Library's Rotary Club Room
Additional information: Dr. Martha Powell will present aspects of her specialty, "Fungi: Friends or Foes," and Dr. Stephen Secor will speak on "Snakes: Facts, Fiction, and Physiology." Attendees may bring brown bag lunches. There is no admission charge, and the public is welcome.

What: Garden Celebrations Tour 2007
When: Sunday, May 20 2007 / 1:00PM - 5:00PM
Where: Gardens in Tuscaloosa and Northport
Additional information: On Sunday, May 20, 2007, the Friends of the University of Alabama Arboretum will host the annual Garden Celebrations tour of five of Tuscaloosa’s loveliest gardens. These gardens will be open from 1:00 to 5:00 pm and staffed with people to answer your gardening questions.

This year's tour features a variety of gardens, including two that overlook Lake Tuscaloosa, a charming garden-home space, a garden inspired by the Far East, and a garden in a new home. All gardeners will find inspiration for their own pursuits, and those who do not garden will have a lovely afternoon observing the hard work and passion of these dedicated West Alabama homeowners.

Tickets will be for sale in advance at Manna Grocery, the Potager, Dunn’s Nursery, the Plant Lady, Canebrake Gardens, and Barton’s Nursery.  Tickets will also be on sale at each house on the day of the tour.  The addresses of the homes on the tour will be posted on the Arboretum Web site the weekend of the tour.  The $20 ticket affords entry to all five gardens and supports the outreach and education efforts of the University of Alabama Arboretum.
